ABOUT
Amethyst on Moh’s Scale of hardness measures 7. Amethyst ranges from reddish purple to deep violet to pale purple and can be transparent or opaque. The color of amethyst can fade over time with exposure to sunlight. The highest grade Amethyst is called "Deep Russian". Worn by St.Valentine Amethyst is the birthstone for February.
COMPOSITION
Aquamarine and Emeralds belong to the same family of Beryl but while emerald obtains its color from Chromium, Aquamarines obtain its color from iron impurities and are of excellent clarity and transparency while emeralds are hazy and inclusive. Deep saturated blue is the most desirable color for Aquamarines.
SOURCE
The leading producer of Aquamarine is Brazil followed by Burma, Australia, China, India, Kenya, Madagascar, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Pakistan, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
FAME
The “Dom Pedro Aquamarine” is the largest most unique 10,363ct cut Aquamarine cut in the shape of an obelisk, placed in the Smithsonian Museum. The “Roosevelt” aquamarine is a staggering 1,298 carats and was presented to First Lady Roosevelt who had allegedly later tried to sell it for its value.
