[Quarantine Edition] The Importance Of A Routine

last updated at July 16, 2022 | 3 min Read

All of us knows that following a routine is a must. But before we get to the benefits, what is a routine?

Routine is defined as a sequence of activities followed regularly.

Do I mean waking up every day at 5AM in the morning? NO!
Do I mean hitting the gym every day at 6AM in the morning? NO!
Do I mean no more of hanging out with friends or downtime? NO!

Let’s say you wake up in the morning and the first thing you do is have your garma garam chai. However, today, you did not do it. What happens? You become cranky. That’s routine!

When you accustom your body to follow a set of (let’s say five) tasks one after the other from a certain time, the body gets used to it and demands it. In fact, if you have got your body used to having a handsome cheese sandwich for breakfast, a bowl of cereals will make you grumpy no matter how healthy and nutritious they are!

During such times, we shouldn’t be leading an unhealthier lifestyle. The more healthy and balanced it is, the more benefits we will reap.

Now that I’ve convinced you that following a routine is beneficial for you, let hop onto the proven benefits of following a routine:

Boosts Our Mental Health

When your mind already knows your daily routine, it’s ready to face the unknown consequences better. However, if your day is uncertain from the time you wake up to the time you sleep, it puts an extra load on your mental health. Having a routine will help ease away from that load without much effort and keep you prepared for any unseen circumstances.

Stress Buster

When your mental health is at peace, do you think it’ll know stress? Certainly not. Sound mental health will significantly drop your stress and help you tackle minor inconveniences better.

Sleep Cycle Sorted

When the quarantine started, my sleep cycle went for a toss. I would wake up barely minute before my work started, take random naps all day long and sleep late at night. It hampered my both my mental and physical health as well as dropped my concentration power significantly. Now I know the importance of a sleep cycle more than ever!

Diet

Once you get into the habit of following a routine in your life, food will definitely be sorted too. Before you say I will never diet, let me make one thing clear - dieting is not depriving your body of food. It’s simply ensuring that you get your daily dose of carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, minerals, proteins, etc.

That being said, I do treat myself to a meatball sub or a burger with peri peri fried once a week because I deserve a prize for being a good girl!

Exercise

Taking a stroll at the park, doing a 15minutes cardio routine, doing pranayama right after you wake up… that’s all. I’m not asking you to go out of your way to exercise. Our jobs are mostly desk jobs and this sedentary lifestyle is the root of all problem. All this can be avoided by just giving half an hour to your body every day.

That was quite simple. Wasn’t it?
Now that I’ve told you the benefits of following a routine, why don’t you tell me yours?
