Citrine measures 7 on Moh’s Scale of Hardness. Natural Citrine is yellow to orange-yellow occurs in light hues to dark shades of yellow, orange, golden and brown. Natural light yellow citrines are often called “Lemon Quartz.” Citrine is very often used as a replacement for Topaz and yellow sapphire. Round and oval cuts are most common.


Citrine belongs to the Quartz family, the same as Amethyst. Mixture of Amethyst and Citrine is called “Ametrine”, it is partially yellow and partially purple with color zoning. Citrines are inexpensive and therefore widely used as a substitute for astrological uses. Trade names for Citrine are “Madeira Topaz”, “Gold Topaz”, “Bahia Topaz”.


Brazil is the world’s largest producer and supplier of Citrine followed by Argentina, Madagascar, Zaire, Namibia, Spain, Russia, Scotland, Uruguay, Burma, Bolivia, France and Zambia.
