ABOUT
Tanzanite was unarguably the discovery of Tiffany and Co. who coined the name Tanzanite to this marvellous blue stone after Tanzania. Found at the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro, it is the only source of Tanzanites in the world. Measuring 6.5 to 7 on Moh’s Scale of hardness tanzanites are a unique shades of electric blues and violets.
COMPOSITION
Tanzanites are formed of the mineral Zoisite, its mineral name is “blue-zoisite” but was renamed “tanzanite” for commercial use. The desirability of the gemstone also lies in the fact that it was formed from the metamorphosis of igneous rocks during collision of tectonic plates that morph into one another through extreme pressure and reach a melting point forming crystal structures.
SOURCE
Found at the base of Mt. Kilimanjaro and city of Arusha, Tanzanite’s only source is the city of Tanzania, South Africa. The only place in the world is a 4km strip of land near the mountain of northern Tanzania. The mines of which are located in an area of 8 square miles in the Merelani Hills.
FAME
The “Heart of the Ocean” of the movie Titanic is rumoured to have actually been a Tanzanite. The “L’Heure Bleu” is the world’s largest carved tanzanite and is said to have been awarded by 1st place in gems carving. The “Petersen” Brooch, part of the Smithsonian collection is a 30 carat changeable brooch that can also be worn as earrings.
